The Academy Award-winning actress and UNHCR goodwill ambassador is calling for constant and long-term assistance.
As a result of the most devastating floods to have ever struck Pakistan, more than 1,750 people have been killed and the havoc that has been wreaked affects more than 18 million in the impoverished country. The floods have inflicted over $40 billion worth of damage to agriculture and infrastructure in a one-month span, according to ABC News.
In an attempt to persuade individuals and governments into providing support for the region, Academy Award-winning actress and UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie is campaigning for assistance. She paid visit to a camp in northwestern Pakistan that currently houses thousands of refugees, and she spoke with displaced women and children while walking through tents in the area.
“From what I understand, this situation is on a scale that we’ve not really seen the likes of,” Jolie said, clad in a black shawl. “It is an extraordinarily complex situation. It is not just the floods. For three decades, Pakistan has hosted Afghani people … and graciously. There are still 1.7 million Afghan people here who have needs particular to refugee needs. Their needs need to be addressed.”
“There are people displaced by the floods and they’ve lost their homes and the flood water was as high as this ceiling when you see the mark, and I was surprised by that, and their needs need to be addressed. All of their homes were washed away. Many of them lost their children during the floods, so there’s irreparable damage.”
Hundreds of millions of more dollars are needed in new donations to provide food, medicine, and shelter for those who have been affected in Pakistan, ABC News reports. Millions of people are at risk if further assistance is not provided.
